Horrible app, great potential
As a frequent user of the app, it’s been unfortunate that it has always been the ugliest app installed on my iPhone. The designers were most likely from the days of iOS 4 or 5 design and have been hoping for a full redesign with a modern flat interface. While the notes mentioned it’s been completely redesigned, that’s a bit of a stretch. While some elements now use the standard iOS 9 flat look, they still manage to squeeze in a lot of ugliness through weird animations and poor layout. One can only assume, rather than hiring new designers our and outside team, the most likely used the same poor designers as last time.
That being said, functionality is most important. The major issue in the past has been that the data doesn’t properly sync with Apple Health. It should sync workouts with the Workout tab in Apple Health but it syncs it to another section. However most all apps look for workout data in Apple Health Workout section. Since MyZone doesn’t, MyFitnessPal and other apps can’t grab the MyZone data. Was hoping this bug would finally be fixed but at quick glance it appears not to be resolved. Here’s for hoping version 3.0 will be an actual full redesign with the Apple Health issue resolved since the band itself is wonderful. -------------
In a world of smart watches with very inaccurately readings, MyZone heart rate monitors work wonderfully, and are integrated into many gym screens meaning users must use the MyZone for compatibility. Unfortunately, the app as all the other reviewers have noted is relatively worthless. Design and user interface wise it’s quite ugly and can only imagine it was designed in house rather than using a modern app design company. The app is also very buggy and unreliable which often goes hand in hand with bad design. The one saving grace would be if it synced the calorie count with AppleHealth since then better designed apps like MyFitness Pal and such could use that data. While MyZone does write to AppleHealth Kit, it unfortunately writes to the general “Active Energy” tab rather than to “Workouts” where it should. Once they fix that to write the data to Workouts instead of Active Energy then all the other wonderful 3rd party apps out there will be able to use that data without having to add it manually. Hopefully they are planning to completely rebuild and redesign the app from the ground up or maybe Apple or a competitor will buy them and keep the bands but replace the app.
